When does the reduced flush on a dual-flush toilet make sense?
The lower-volume flush only saves water in practice if it clears the bowl reliably. How do you judge when it’s suitable for the waste involved, given that bowl design and flush performance vary?
If the reduced flush often leaves residue or leads to a second flush, what signs point to an adjustment or maintenance issue rather than a low-volume setting that simply isn’t adequate for that use? I’m interested in what to consider before changing the flush settings or deciding the fixture isn’t a good fit.

I’d judge the reduced setting by whether it clears reliably for the ordinary use you expect, not just by the water setting itself. If the full flush works but the reduced one repeatedly needs a second flush, the lower volume may simply not suit that use. If performance has worsened on both settings, I’d look for a change in the toilet’s performance or an adjustment issue before blaming the reduced setting alone.
