What cleaning methods are safe for a low-flow showerhead?
When mineral deposits leave a showerhead’s spray uneven, how do you find a cleaning method that won’t damage it? I’d check the manufacturer’s care instructions before soaking it in vinegar or another cleaner. Do manufacturers generally specify a particular method, or are there safe general approaches? And when might cleaning be unlikely to help enough to justify replacing the head?

Replacement may be reasonable if a manufacturer-approved cleaning does not restore an acceptable spray, or if the head is cracked, leaking, or has damaged spray outlets. If the problem persists, it could also be worth checking whether the restriction is elsewhere rather than assuming the head needs replacing.
Start with the showerhead’s care instructions: materials and finishes differ, so a cleaner or soaking method safe for one model may damage another. If you can’t find guidance, use a gentle wipe or rinse and avoid soaking it or using harsh cleaners until you can confirm what the manufacturer allows.
Many manufacturers provide care guidance for a showerhead, though the detail varies: some specify cleaners or methods to avoid, while others give only general cleaning advice. The manual or support page for the exact model is the best place to check before soaking it.
