How much food should a disposal baffle keep out of the drain?
A sink strainer basket catches scraps before they reach the drain. A garbage-disposal baffle isn’t a strainer, but I’m curious how much food residue it tends to hold back in everyday use.
Does using a basket meaningfully reduce the chance of scraps collecting in the trap or branch drain, or does regular disposal use make that difference small? A basket needs emptying, while residue caught around a baffle may be awkward to clean. Which setup tends to be easier to maintain without encouraging clogs downstream?

I’d lean toward a basket if the goal is to keep larger scraps out of the drain - and only if emptying it becomes part of the normal cleanup. You can see and remove what it catches; a disposal may be quicker for routine residue, but it doesn’t make the baffle a reliable strainer. Neither choice guarantees a clog-free drain.
