How far should a washer drain hose sit in the standpipe?
How do you tell whether a washer is siphoning water out because its drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, rather than because the washer is actively draining? If the water level drops during a cycle, what should I observe to distinguish those situations?
I’m also curious how much the hose’s insertion depth and the standpipe height matter. Should the hose be secured so it can’t slip out, while leaving the standpipe opening unsealed for an air gap?

Watch when water is actually discharging at the standpipe: flow that tracks the washer’s drain-pump operation is active draining; flow that continues while the pump is off suggests siphoning. Hose insertion depth and standpipe height can affect siphoning, so follow the washer manual’s limits rather than guessing at a universal depth. Secure the hose against slipping, but don’t seal the standpipe opening - the air gap matters.
