A washer pan can catch water, but what if there’s no drain?

A drain pan and a floor-level leak alarm solve different problems: the pan can contain some water, while the alarm can only warn someone who’s able to hear or receive it. How do people weigh those limits when choosing protection for a washer?

Does a pan make sense only when its outlet can drain somewhere suitable, or can it still be useful without a nearby drain? I’m also curious how much confidence to put in a floor alarm if a hose or washer leak could send water outside the area where the sensor sits. What layout details matter most when deciding between them, or using both?
