septic system upkeep: DIY or hire a pro?

Okay, so my septic system is due for some TLC soon, and I'm kinda torn between handling it myself or just biting the bullet and hiring someone. I've watched a few YouTube vids, and it doesn't seem too complicated, but then again, messing up could mean a pretty gross disaster in my backyard, you know? Has anyone here tackled this themselves, or is it better to just pay a pro and avoid the headache?

- DIY is doable, but honestly, septic isn't where you wanna learn by trial and error.
- I've seen tenants try it themselves... cleanup wasn't pretty.
- How old is your system anyway? Older setups can be trickier than those vids suggest.
