my backyard septic adventure: a cautionary tale

So yesterday, I decided to finally tackle the septic tank situation in my backyard - figured it couldn't be that complicated, right? Um, turns out there's a lot more to it than just lifting a lid and peeking inside...

I’d push back on the idea that it’s mainly a matter of “lifting the lid and peeking inside.” A septic tank shouldn’t be opened casually, even for a quick look. Toxic gases can collect around the opening, the lid or surrounding soil may be structurally unsafe, and contact with sewage creates a real contamination risk.
If the tank needs inspection, have a licensed septic professional handle the access, check the baffles and liquid level, and assess whether pumping is needed. That’s especially important if the lid is damaged, buried, or not clearly secured.
