Is a septic riser worth adding to a buried tank?

A riser can make future inspections and pumping easier, but I wouldn’t assume it’s a straightforward add-on for every buried tank. How much do tank depth and the condition or design of the access opening affect whether a riser is practical?

I’d also want to know how the riser and lid should be sealed and secured, and how the installation should keep surface water out or protect the lid where vehicles might pass. Do local requirements or the tank manufacturer’s specifications change what’s acceptable? For those who’ve weighed both options, what made a riser worthwhile, or made leaving the access buried the better choice?

I’d lean toward adding a riser when buried access would make future inspections or pumping a recurring hassle, as long as the opening can be extended appropriately and the installation is acceptable under local requirements. If access is already easy enough, the added work may not be worth it.
