Disposal hums, then trips its overload
A brief hum before a garbage disposal trips its overload protector seems like a useful clue, but I’m not sure what it tells you. Could a jam cause that sequence, or might a motor or electrical supply problem produce the same symptom?
For a safe first check, should the power be disconnected before testing whether the turntable moves freely with the disposal’s proper tool? Would it matter whether the protector trips immediately or only after the hum? I’d also like to know how much the unit’s age and any recent change in noise or performance help narrow it down, and what signs mean it’s time for a repair rather than more homeowner checks.
