Yeah, citrus peels are great for freshening things up, but moderation is definitely key. I've seen plenty of disposals jammed with orange peels or potato skinsβthose things turn into a gluey mess real quick. Had a customer once who thought banana peels would be fine... spent a good hour pulling out slimy banana strings. Stick to ice cubes and small amounts of citrus, and steer clear of anything stringy or starchy. Saves a lotta headaches later.
I've actually had decent luck with potato skins, but the trick is small quantities and lots of water. A handful at a time, flushed thoroughly, hasn't given me trouble yet. Banana peels though... yeah, learned that one the hard way myself. Another tipβevery few months, toss in some baking soda and vinegar. Clears out gunk and takes care of funky smells without risking jams from citrus overload.
Potato skins in small amounts might be okay for a bit, but honestly, why risk it? Even if they're not causing immediate jams, they can still stick around and eventually clog things up deeper down the line. And while baking soda and vinegar might help with smells, they're not really powerful enough to clear out serious buildup. Have you tried just grinding ice cubes every now and then? It sharpens the blades and knocks loose any stubborn gunkβusually quieter after, too.
