Stopper lifts only partway, and the linkage isn’t obvious

What’s the best way to tell whether a bathroom sink stopper that won’t seal or lift fully needs a linkage adjustment, cleaning, or a replacement part?

I’d first want to know whether the stopper moves freely by hand and whether the pivot rod actually catches and moves it. If it does, but the lift is limited or the stopper sits crooked, is that a sign the linkage is loose or misaligned? What clues point instead to a worn stopper or a problem with the pivot-rod seal?

Which adjustments are generally safe to try before replacing parts, and when is it better to leave the drain assembly alone and have it assessed?

If the stopper lifts smoothly by hand but the lever barely moves it, check whether the pivot rod is still catching the stopper; loose or misaligned linkage can limit travel or leave it crooked. If movement feels sticky even by hand, clean off buildup and retest. A bent or cracked stopper, damaged linkage, or worn seal points toward replacement rather than more adjustment. You can make a small linkage adjustment and check the fit, but avoid forcing a stuck rod or loosening parts you cannot reseat securely; get the assembly assessed if it leaks around the pivot rod or remains uncertain.
