RE: Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?
I’ve run into this a few times, especially in older houses. It’s not always just random, though it can feel like it. Traditionally, hot water handles turn counterclockwise to open and cold water handles turn clockwise. T...
RE: How would I remove this stem to replace it?
Totally relate to that. I’ve had my fair share of “what’s hiding behind this wall?” moments. I tend to use those fire blankets made from recycled materials - bit pricier, but they’re reusable and don’t drip like wet rags...
RE: Under sink vs. countertop filters: which is less hassle to install?
I get the worry about hidden leaks under the sink - water damage is no joke, and it’s not always obvious until it’s too late. But honestly, I’ve found countertop filters to be more of a hassle in the long run, especially...
RE: Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps - what would you do?
I hear you on the smell issue - my neighbor had a similar problem with their in-kitchen trap, and it definitely wasn’t pleasant. But I do worry about underground units too, especially if there’s ever a leak or overflow y...
RE: Finally won the battle against invading tree roots
I’d be careful with those root-killing foams, especially after lining. Some of the chemicals can actually degrade the liner over time, depending on what it’s made from. I’ve always stuck to regular camera checks every tw...
RE: Rusty water heater woes - repair or replace?
Tankless is definitely tempting for the endless hot water, but I do worry about a couple of things - especially in terms of safety and long-term reliability. My neighbor's tankless unit shut down during a power outage la...
RE: green plumbing showdown: greywater recycling vs rainwater harvesting
That's a very important point. In my experience, rainwater systems near heavy tree coverage definitely require more frequent maintenance. I'd also add that climate plays a role beyond just debris - areas prone to freezin...
RE: Thinking about swapping to a pedestal sink - tips or regrets?
Been there myself - wish I'd seen this silicone tip sooner. When we swapped ours out, I was overly cautious about sealing it properly (water damage paranoia), so I used a pretty heavy-duty caulk. Removing it later was a ...
RE: My garbage disposal smells like a swamp monster moved in
I've used the baking soda and vinegar method too, but I usually dilute the vinegar first - straight vinegar can be harsh on some disposal seals. Had a friend who wrecked theirs that way... better safe than sorry.
RE: Kitchen sink disaster - DIY or call a plumber?
Couldn't agree more with the bucket tip - learned that one the hard way myself. I'd also add, from experience, that it's worth double-checking your shut-off valves periodically. Older valves can sometimes fail or leak un...
RE: anyone tried sustainable plumbing upgrades at home?
You're spot on about guest comfort - I've had similar experiences explaining our greywater system. People can be hesitant at first, but once they see it's safe and sanitary, they usually come around. Small steps like low...
RE: pipes freezing again - any tips to keep things flowing?
That's solid advice right there. I've been down this road too, and honestly, insulation alone rarely cuts it - especially when temps really plummet. One thing I'd add, especially if you're cautious about safety (like me)...
RE: Catching and storing rain - my DIY setup
Good points about overflow and stability - I learned the hard way too. A few years back, I underestimated how heavy a full barrel can get after a storm. Ended up with a cracked barrel and a muddy mess near my foundation....
