RE: Finally ditched the black tank: my dry loo journey
The washable towel trick really does make things easier. I used to worry about lingering smells, but swapping towels out is way less hassle than I expected. Curious - do you do anything special to keep the cardboard from...
RE: Handy shortcuts for finding plumbing info quick
I hear you on that - had a push-to-connect under my kitchen sink once because I was in a rush, and it worked… until it didn’t. Came home to a slow drip that had warped the cabinet base. Ever since, I’m way more careful a...
RE: When is it time to swap out old pipes?
That “whack-a-mole” feeling is exactly what I’m worried about. We’ve got a 1950s house and the pipes are definitely showing their age - had a couple of leaks patched, but I’m always half-expecting another one to pop up s...
RE: When your living room is a sauna but your bedroom's an igloo
I had almost the same thing happen in my old place, and it drove me nuts for months. I kept cranking the thermostat up and down, but it never really fixed anything - just made my energy bill spike. It’s wild how somethin...
RE: Plumbing pros weigh in: new app promises faster fixes and fewer headaches
I get what you mean about the late-night alerts. I’ve been burned by a slow leak before, too - literally found out when my kid’s sock came out of the cabinet damp. Still, I keep wondering if these apps are worth the cost...
RE: Battle Of The Blocked Sink: Which Magic Potion Actually Works?
I learned the hard way that pulling the trap isn’t nearly as dramatic as it sounds - unless you forget to put a bucket underneath. Let’s just say my socks didn’t survive. I’m with you on the enzyme cleaners for maintenan...
RE: green plumbing showdown: greywater recycling vs rainwater harvesting
You’re not kidding about the “new chore” thing. When we put in a basic rainwater barrel setup, I thought it’d be a set-and-forget deal. Turns out, nope - if you ignore that filter basket for a few weeks, you get a scienc...
RE: SEPTIC SYSTEM NIGHTMARES: DID YOU KNOW THIS?
Ugh, I feel your pain. When we moved into our place, the inspection said everything was good to go. But a few months later, we discovered the previous owners had been pouring grease down the drain for years. Talk about a...
RE: Plumber emergency: DIY quick fixes or call the pros?
Had a similar experience with epoxy putty myself - worked great on a bathroom sink leak for months. But honestly, after a friend's DIY fix burst overnight and flooded their basement...I tend to call in a pro for anything...
RE: Thermostat acting weird, DIY fix or call a pro?
Good tip about the photos, wish I'd thought of that before I tackled mine last winter. Ended up with a mystery wire leftover - still bugs me. Anyone ever had luck labeling wires beforehand, or is that overkill?
RE: need some advice on setting up a rain harvesting setup at home
I hear you on the hassle factor - been there myself. But honestly, skipping the finer mesh now might mean more headaches later. I learned this the hard way after a storm clogged my rain barrel intake with leaves and debr...
RE: low-flow shower heads vs faucet aerators - which saves more?
Haha, exactly my experience! I remember standing there forever, trying to rinse conditioner out of my hair, wondering if I was actually saving anything. Eventually switched to a slightly pricier low-flow head with adjust...
RE: Finally got my bathroom reno right for everyone to use comfortably
Interesting you noticed that much difference - I did a similar flush and clean last spring and honestly couldn't tell much had changed. Maybe my pipes weren't as gunked up, or it depends on local water hardness...either ...
RE: just read about a guy flooding his house trying to DIY install bathroom fixtures
Totally feel you on the plumber's tape issue. I remember trying to save a few bucks by DIY-ing my bathroom sink install. Thought I had it nailed with tape alone, but ended up with a sneaky leak behind the vanity. Luckily...
RE: my shower's water pressure is pathetic lately
Yeah, I've noticed something similar at home. At first I thought it was the city messing with the water pressure too, but then I remembered I'd installed one of those water-saving showerheads last year. Thought it was a ...
