Where would you put a sediment filter in a softener setup?

Filter placement seems like a trade-off: upstream filtration could keep sediment out of the softener, while a filter after it could catch particles before they reach household fixtures. But the right layout probably depends on what’s actually in the water, not just the fact that there’s a softener.

How do the water source and type of sediment affect that choice? I’m also curious how much the filter’s micron rating and pressure drop should weigh in. Is there a point where filtering more finely starts to undermine flow enough that another placement makes more sense?
