is my water softener wasting salt and money?
I've had this water softener system for about 3 years now, and lately I've been noticing we're going through salt bags way faster than before. Like, noticeably faster. I haven't changed anything major in our water usage habits, so I'm kinda scratching my head here. A buddy of mine mentioned something about settings or calibration or whatever, but honestly, I never really messed with it after the initial install.
Is there some kind of maintenance or adjustment I should be doing regularly to keep it running smoothly? Or maybe it's just getting old and less efficient over time...I dunno. If anyone's dealt with something similar or has tips on how to dial it in better, I'd appreciate it. Salt ain't exactly cheap these days, you know?

I’d start with routine checks rather than assume the softener is wearing out: check that the salt tank isn’t bridged or caked, and review the regeneration schedule and settings against the manual. Avoid changing settings by guesswork, since the right values depend on the unit and water conditions. Faster salt use alone doesn’t identify the cause; how often it regenerates compared with before would be a useful clue.
Age can eventually matter if a component wears or a control develops a fault, but three years by itself doesn’t show the softener is becoming inefficient. I’d look at the tank and regeneration behavior first, as the other reply suggests, and compare the settings with the manual rather than changing them by guesswork. Without the model and details such as regeneration frequency, there isn’t enough here to say whether age is involved.
