When is a pressure regulator worth replacing?
If a pressure-reducing valve still seems to control the pressure but the flow fluctuates at times, what findings would justify servicing it versus replacing the valve? I’m curious whether the variation happens at several fixtures or only while water is flowing, and what a plumber can learn by checking the regulator and pressure downstream of it.
Would wear or a repairable problem show up clearly during that inspection? Age seems like a weak reason by itself to replace a valve, especially since replacement means more work. I’d like to understand what evidence makes that extra work worthwhile.

Comparing pressure downstream with no water running and while water is flowing could show whether the regulator holds steady at rest but struggles under demand. If several fixtures show the same fluctuation, that points more toward a shared supply or regulator issue; a symptom confined to one fixture gives a plumber reason to check that fixture’s restriction first. I’d weigh those findings and whether servicing is likely to restore stable operation - not the valve’s age alone - before choosing replacement.
