That’s interesting—never tried hybrid tape myself, but I hear you on the mastic mess.

“it started to sag a bit where the condensation was worst”
That’s kind of what I’d worry about, especially in a damp crawlspace. Have you ever tried using that spray sealant stuff instead? I’ve patched a duct joint with it once and it held up okay for a season, though I still went back later and did it “properly.” Curious if anyone’s had better luck with something that actually holds up to moisture long-term...

Honestly, I’m not sold on the spray sealant for anything long-term, especially in spots with a lot of moisture. I tried it once under a bathroom floor—seemed fine at first, but after a couple months the edges started peeling where it got damp. Maybe it’s better as a quick fix if you’re in a pinch, but I’d be nervous relying on it for a whole season.

Hybrid tape’s not perfect either, but at least you can see when it starts to fail. With spray stuff, sometimes the leak creeps back before you notice. If you’re dealing with real condensation issues, I’d probably stick with mastic and mesh, even if it’s messy. Just my two cents... sometimes the old-school way is less hassle in the long run.

Yeah, I hear you on the spray sealant. I tried using it around some ductwork in my crawlspace last winter—looked solid at first, but after a couple freeze-thaw cycles, it started flaking off. The stuff just doesn’t seem to hold up when there’s any real moisture or temp swings. Mastic and mesh is messy, sure, but at least you know it’s not going anywhere for a while. I do keep a can of spray on hand for emergencies though... sometimes you just need something quick to get through the night.

Totally get that. I’ve been burned by spray sealant too—looked fine until the temps dropped, then it basically peeled off like old paint. I know mastic is a pain, but honestly, for the price and peace of mind, it’s worth the mess. I’d rather spend a bit more time upfront than keep redoing it every season. Still, I keep a cheap roll of foil tape around for those “just gotta make it till morning” moments. Sometimes you just need a band-aid fix.

I hear you on the mastic—messy, but it actually works. I tried the spray stuff once and it looked like I’d fixed it, but by morning it was flaking off and my living room felt like a walk-in freezer. Now I keep both foil tape and mastic around, just in case. The tape’s saved me a few times when I just needed to stop the cold air for a night or two. Honestly, I wish someone had warned me how much of homeownership is just creative patch jobs until you can do it right...
