heater acting possessed and driving me nuts

Okay, seriously, my heater has decided it has a mind of its own lately. It'll randomly start blowing cold air when it's set to warm, or sometimes it'll just shut off completely for no reason. I've checked the thermostat batteries and filters already - nothing obvious there. It's like it's possessed or something, you know? Wondering if this is just my luck or if anyone else has dealt with something similar.

Had something similar happen last winter - turned out to be a flaky flame sensor. Have you noticed if it cycles on and off repeatedly before blowing cold air, or does it just randomly switch? Could narrow things down a bit...
