At this point, I’d rather do the annoying fix once than crawl under there again mid-winter.

That’s the truth. I’ve tried to shortcut with foil tape too, thinking it’d save time, but it just doesn’t last. Ever tried using mesh tape with mastic? It’s a bit more work, but I’ve found it holds up better, especially in damp spots. Cleanup’s still a pain, but at least you’re not back under the house when it’s freezing. Curious if you’ve noticed any difference with brands of mastic, or is it all just equally messy?

Yeah, totally get wanting to avoid another crawl under the house in January. I’ve tried both foil tape and mesh with mastic, and honestly, mesh plus mastic seems to last way longer—especially when things get damp or dusty. The cleanup is a drag, but worth it for peace of mind. As for brands, I haven’t noticed a huge difference... they all seem equally sticky and messy to me. Maybe there’s a “magic” clean mastic out there, but I haven’t found it yet.

Funny thing, I’ve actually had the opposite luck with foil tape, at least in my old crawlspace. Maybe it’s just the climate here, but the mesh+mastic combo kept peeling after a couple years—probably because our winters are so wet and the ducts sweat like crazy. Foil tape (the good UL-rated stuff) stuck around longer than I expected. Cleanup’s easier too, which is a bonus when you’re trying to avoid breathing in dust bunnies. Guess it really depends on the house...

I’ve seen both sides of this, honestly. Here’s what I’ve noticed over the years:

- Mesh and mastic is solid if you can get everything bone dry first, but in damp crawlspaces, it just doesn’t always hold up. Once moisture gets in, it starts to peel or crack.
- Foil tape (the real stuff, not the cheap hardware store knockoff) actually does a decent job if you prep the surface right—clean, dry, and dust-free. Not always easy under a house, but worth it.
- Cleanup with mastic is a pain. That stuff sticks to everything and takes forever to get off your hands and tools.

Curious—has anyone tried those newer hybrid tapes? I’ve seen some that claim to work even on slightly damp surfaces, but haven’t had a reason to test them yet. Wondering if they’re just marketing hype or actually useful for tricky spots like crawlspaces...

I actually tried one of those hybrid tapes last month when I found a small leak in the ductwork under my house. The packaging said it would stick to “damp or dusty” surfaces, and honestly, it did go on easier than foil tape—no peeling corners or anything. But after a couple weeks, I noticed it started to sag a bit where the condensation was worst. It’s better than nothing if you can’t get things totally dry, but I wouldn’t trust it for a long-term fix in a really wet crawlspace. Still, less messy than mastic, that’s for sure.
