I've had pretty good luck with silicone grease too, but one thing I'd add is to double-check compatibility with your specific toilet parts. Some manufacturers actually recommend certain lubricants over others, and I've seen a few cases where silicone grease caused minor swelling in cheaper rubber seals. Nothing catastrophic, just mildly annoying. Overall though, you're probably fineβjust keep an eye on things periodically and trust your gut if something looks off.
I've seen silicone grease work fine most times, but did have one job where the rubber seal swelled up slightly after about 6 months. Switched to plumber's grease since thenβno issues yet. Just something to keep in mind.
Had a similar issue myselfβused silicone grease on a faucet seal, and it swelled up after a few months. Switched to plumber's grease too, and it's been fine since. Wonder if certain rubber types react differently to silicone...?
"Wonder if certain rubber types react differently to silicone...?"
I've seen similar stuff happen, but I'm not convinced it's purely about rubber types. Could temperature or water hardness play a role? Had seals swell in one property but not anotherβsame grease, different water supply. Curious...
Had a similar issue at my new place...thought I was cursed by the toilet gods. Turned out our water was super hard, and it was messing up the seals. Switched to a silicone grease they recommended at the hardware store, and it sorted things out pretty quick. Maybe it's less about rubber types and more about your house being haunted by mineral spirits? Just a thought.
