Recycled-content PEX or bio-based PEX: which is the better trade-off?

I’m comparing recycled-content PEX with bio-based PEX for a residential potable-water installation, and I’m trying not to treat either label as automatic proof of sustainability.
The recycled-content option seems easier to evaluate if the manufacturer provides a verified percentage and identifies whether the material is pre-consumer or post-consumer. The bio-based option raises a different question: does the plant-derived feedstock reduce overall impact without changing the pipe’s service life, certification, or end-of-life handling?
For either type, I’d want to confirm:
- Certification for the intended potable-water use, not just general plumbing approval
- Pressure and temperature ratings that match the installation
- Whether the fittings and connection method are the same as standard PEX
- How much pipe is likely to become offcut waste, and whether the manufacturer offers any take-back or recycling route
- Whether the recycled or bio-based content is independently verified rather than only described in marketing language
- What happens to the pipe at replacement, since PEX recycling and disposal can be more complicated than installation
A material that lasts longer and produces fewer failed joints or discarded offcuts could be the lower-impact choice even if its feedstock story sounds less impressive. On the other hand, a bio-based formulation might be worthwhile if durability and certifications are unchanged and the manufacturer can document the content clearly.
For those who’ve specified or installed either type, are the fittings, bending behavior, and installation waste noticeably different? I’m especially interested in whether manufacturers provide useful end-of-life guidance, or whether both options ultimately face the same disposal limitations.
