Keeping water out of the basement: what’s actually worked for you?

Here’s what I did when my basement started resembling a swimming pool last spring: First, I checked the gutters and downspouts, made sure they were clear and pointing away from the house. Then I patched up any visible cracks in the foundation with hydraulic cement (messy job, not gonna lie). After that, I added a sump pump—kind of pricey but it’s saved me more than once. Anyone got a better trick or something less labor-intensive? Curious if there’s a magic bullet I’m missing here.

if you’re not moving water away from the house, you’re just spinning your wheels.

Man, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on fancy pumps when all they needed was another five feet of downspout. Had a customer last fall—kept mopping up water in the basement, thought his foundation was toast. Turns out his downspout was dumping water right at the corner. Added an extension and he hasn’t called since... which is actually a little sad for my wallet, but good for him. Sometimes simple really does win.
