What points to a damaged shower valve body?

A leak at the handle and water continuing into the tub or shower after the valve is shut off can point to different parts of the valve, so I’m curious how plumbers separate a worn cartridge from damage inside the valve body.

What inspection findings actually support replacing the cartridge alone, and what would make you suspect the body itself is damaged? I’d also like to know how valve age and parts availability affect that call. If the evidence is uncertain, does the amount of wall access needed usually change whether a plumber investigates further before recommending body replacement?
