What should a bathtub overflow gasket replacement quote include?
A quote to replace a leaking bathtub overflow gasket may cover more than the gasket itself if the overflow assembly or nearby connections are damaged. How can I tell whether the proposed scope is reasonable, especially if the plumber may need to open a wall or access panel?
I’d want the quote to distinguish diagnosis, parts, labor, and any access or finish work. If the leak appears only when water reaches the overflow, should checking the assembly and connections be part of the initial scope? And if that check reveals additional work, how should the plumber price it and get approval before proceeding?

A reasonable initial quote can include checking the overflow plate, gasket, and accessible nearby connections, but it should say what is only being inspected versus replaced. If an existing access panel makes that check possible, its cost is different from cutting into a finished wall; ask that opening and restoring the wall be listed separately. If inspection reveals a damaged connection, get the added plumbing work and any finish work priced and approved before it proceeds.
