Gotta say, while I agree roof climbing isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'd argue that running a garden hose through the cleanout isn't always the best move either. Seen folks try it and end up flooding their bathrooms with some pretty nasty stuff. Cameras and snakes are great, but if it's a serious blockage, sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and get eyes on it directly—safely, of course. Just my two cents from experience...

Good points there, but honestly, climbing onto the roof is a no-go for me—too risky. I'd rather spend a bit extra on a pro with a camera or snake than deal with sewage flooding my bathroom... learned that lesson the hard way once already.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—nobody wants to risk a fall just to check a vent. But if you’re ever in a pinch and can’t get a pro out right away, there are safe ways to check ground-level cleanouts or even use a drain bladder. Not saying it’s always fun, but sometimes it beats waiting knee-deep in the mess... Learned that one during a holiday weekend when every plumber was booked solid.

Yeah, I’ve had to get creative a couple times too, especially when the backup happens at the worst possible moment. One time, I tried using a drain bladder and honestly, I was pretty skeptical at first. But it actually did the trick—at least enough to keep things moving until the pros could get out. I do wonder, though, about how much poking around is too much before you risk making it worse. Like, I’ve heard stories about folks cracking pipes or pushing a clog further down.

I’m always a little torn between wanting to fix it myself and worrying I’ll just end up with a bigger mess. But you’re right, sometimes you just can’t wait, especially if you’ve got a house full of people and nowhere for the water to go. Anyone else ever try those enzyme treatments? I’ve never had much luck, but maybe I’m just impatient...

Enzyme treatments are kind of hit or miss in my experience—sometimes they help a little, but they’re not a magic fix, especially if you’ve already got a backup. I usually tell folks to be careful with drain bladders too; if you’ve got old or brittle pipes, it’s easy to do more harm than good. Ever notice any weird smells or soggy patches in the yard before things back up inside? That can be an early warning sign the tank’s overdue for pumping...
