What should a sewer root-removal quote include?

A quote to cut roots from a sewer line may clear the blockage, but it doesn’t necessarily show whether the pipe itself needs attention. I’m not sure what scope is reasonable to expect before approving the work.

Would you ask whether a camera inspection is included before or after cutting, and whether any findings are documented separately from the root removal? I’d also like to understand how quotes distinguish the cost of cutting roots from any recommended pipe repair, and whether access and cleanup are itemized. What details have helped you compare quotes without assuming the pipe is damaged?

I’d compare quotes more confidently if the camera inspection and root cutting were listed as distinct items, with the inspection record - ideally video or images plus a brief written finding - provided separately. That makes it easier to see what the clearing costs and what was actually observed, without treating a contractor’s repair recommendation as proof the pipe is damaged. Inspection timing matters too, but I’d first want the scope and documentation clear.

I’d lean toward a camera pass after cutting if the goal is to document the cleared line; a pre-cut view seems most valuable when there’s a specific concern about pipe condition that clearing could obscure. If both are quoted, I’d want the contractor to explain what each pass is meant to establish so the extra cost isn’t just a default add-on.

For access and cleanup, I’d want enough detail to tell what could change the total, not identical wording across quotes. For example, a quote could say whether the crew expects to use an existing cleanout or whether extra access work is excluded, and what cleanup is included afterward. That makes a low headline price easier to compare without turning the quote request into a long checklist.

Suppose one quote lists root cutting and a post-cut camera pass separately, while another bundles them. If the footage shows a possible defect, I’d use that as a reason to request a separate repair estimate - not as approval for repair on the spot. Keeping those steps distinct makes the immediate clearing cost easier to compare with any later decision.
