How much room does a water heater need for service?
A tight utility space can make it hard to leave room around a water heater without blocking access to other things. How do clearance requirements differ between gas and electric models, and which distances are safety-critical versus mainly needed for inspection or service?
I’d also like to know how much access should be kept to the controls, shutoffs, and temperature-and-pressure relief valve discharge pipe. Would you start with the heater’s installation instructions, then confirm any local requirements with the authority having jurisdiction?

Gas models can have additional clearance requirements for combustion air and venting; electric models do not have those particular needs. Neither type has one universal clearance: follow the specific heater’s installation instructions and applicable local rules. Treat required clearances as safety requirements, not optional service space; separately leave enough practical room to inspect and service the unit. Keep the controls and shutoffs reachable, and keep the T&P discharge pipe and its outlet unobstructed. Checking the instructions and confirming local requirements with the authority having jurisdiction is the right starting point.
