Finally got my bathroom reno approved - permit process wasn’t as scary as I thought

The inspector flagged a missing damper in my vent hood - seemed minor, but apparently it keeps cold air and critters out. Wouldn’t have caught that myself.

The sneaky damper strikes again... I’ve seen more than a few folks skip that step and end up with a bathroom draftier than a haunted house. Did you have to wrestle with the foil tape too? I swear that stuff has a mind of its own. Ever try the mastic goo instead, or is foil tape your go-to?

Foil tape is the bane of my existence. I went in thinking it’d be like wrapping a present - nope, more like wrestling an angry octopus. It sticks to everything except where you want it, and then somehow manages to slice your fingers if you look at it wrong. I haven’t tried the mastic goo yet, but honestly, I’m tempted after this last round. Does it actually seal better, or is it just less likely to end up all over your hands and the cat?

That’s exactly what happened here. I had no idea a missing damper could make such a difference - thought the vent was just “extra fresh air” until I realized my bathroom was colder than my fridge. Inspector caught it right away, which made me feel like maybe I should’ve watched a few more YouTube videos before starting.

Curious if anyone else’s inspector was super picky about venting? Mine checked every single clamp and connection, even the direction of airflow. Is that normal, or did I just get the inspector who moonlights as Sherlock Holmes?

Yeah, inspectors can be super thorough with venting - mine even checked for foil tape overlap and made me redo a section because it wasn’t “airtight enough.” As for mastic, it’s messy but honestly seals better, especially on joints that don’t line up perfectly. It does get a little easier once you figure out how much to use, but I still wouldn’t call it fun. I’ve started keeping a box of disposable gloves in the garage just for that reason.

Had an inspector once who was fixated on the gap under my bathroom door. He measured it twice and made me trim it down another quarter inch for “ventilation.” Never would’ve guessed that’d be the sticking point. Meanwhile, he barely glanced at the plumbing.
