That matte black story hits home. I once thought matte black handles would be a cool upgrade in my own bathroom—looked amazing for about a week. After that, it was like a crime scene for fingerprints.

“Tenants complained about it looking ‘dirty’ even after cleaning.”
I totally get it. Brushed nickel’s not as flashy, but it’s way more forgiving.

Funny about aerators too... I’ve had to explain to my uncle three times now that “low flow” usually just means he needs to clean out the gunk. He still blames the city water.

Yeah, that’s the problem with matte black—looks sharp until it doesn’t. I switched to brushed nickel a while back for rentals and haven’t looked back. It hides water spots and fingerprints way better. As for aerators, I keep a cheap toothbrush under the sink just for cleaning those out. Saves a lot of “low flow” complaints. City water gets blamed for everything, but it’s usually just buildup.

That’s so true—my partner’s always blaming the water, but half the time it’s just gunk in the aerator. I’m with you on brushed nickel. I tried matte black once because it looked cool, but the smudges drove me nuts. If you’re into eco stuff, there are some low-flow fixtures that actually work now and don’t feel like you’re rinsing your hands under a trickle. Worth a look if you want to save some water (and maybe a little on the bill).

I get the appeal of low-flow fixtures, but I’ve had mixed luck with them. Maybe I just picked the wrong brand, but the shower felt like it took forever to rinse out shampoo. Have you found any that actually have decent pressure? I’m all for saving water, but I don’t want to stand there twice as long, you know? Also, brushed nickel is great for hiding fingerprints, but I kinda miss the look of chrome sometimes...

It’s funny you mention water pressure with low-flow fixtures because I’ve run into that a lot, and honestly, it’s not always about the brand—it’s sometimes about how the fixture is installed or even what your home’s water pressure is to start with. I’ve seen cases where people swapped out a “bad” low-flow head, but the real issue was sediment clogging up the lines or a pressure regulator set too low. Sometimes just cleaning out the aerators makes a huge difference.

For showerheads, there are models designed to increase the velocity of the water even if the flow rate is lower. The trick is to look for ones with pressure-compensating technology. They’re not all created equal, though—some still feel weak, but others really do surprise you. I’ve had better luck with certain brands (like Speakman or Moen), but it can be hit or miss.

As for finishes, brushed nickel definitely hides spots better, but I get what you mean about chrome. It just has that classic shine, even if you’re constantly wiping it down. Sometimes I wonder if the extra cleaning is worth the look... depends on how much you want to fuss with it, I guess.
