Drip line or soaker hose for a mixed garden bed?

How much do plant spacing and bed shape affect the choice between drip irrigation and soaker hoses? Drip lines seem easier to aim at separated plants, while a soaker hose may suit a continuous row, but I’m unsure how reliably either delivers water across a bed when the run is long or pressure varies.

I’d also like to understand the upkeep before choosing. What filtration or pressure regulation is commonly needed for each, and how different are they to flush, repair, and put away or winterize? I’m interested in whether the more targeted option actually saves water in a given layout, or whether setup and maintenance can outweigh that advantage.

Even with steady inlet pressure, friction can reduce pressure toward the far end of a long run, and a slope can add to the difference. If the bed can’t be divided into shorter zones, pressure-compensating drip emitters may help keep their output more even within their specified operating range. A soaker hose can still deliver unevenly along its length, so its simplicity doesn’t guarantee uniform watering.

Plant spacing is a useful way to choose between them: drip emitters can target separated plants’ root zones, while a soaker hose suits a continuous row where watering a strip makes sense. That targeting saves water only if it avoids wetting soil that would otherwise be watered, and the plants can use the water delivered there. A bed’s shape or planting pattern alone doesn’t guarantee lower water use.
