Kitchen Sink Nightmare: Quick Trick to Keep the Disposal from Backing Up
Had this annoying thing where my disposal kept backing up and smelling funky. Friend told me to freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and toss a few cubes down there every week or two. Works like a charm, keeps it fresh and clear. Anyone got other handy tricks?

For funky smells, another simple thing to check is the underside of the rubber splash guard, where food residue can collect. With the disposal switched off, clean it from above with a brush - never put your hand into the disposal.
For preventing backups, I’d prioritize what goes down the disposal over freshening it afterward: keep grease out, and run water while grinding and briefly afterward to help carry food through. Vinegar cubes may help with odor, but they won’t clear a clog that’s already forming.
Would you clean under the splash guard on a regular schedule, or just when an odor comes back?
I’d make it an occasional check rather than wait for the smell to return - especially if food residue is visible. A quick brush from above with the disposal switched off seems easy to add to routine sink cleaning; no need to reach into the disposal.
For odor alone, a small amount of citrus peel can be another occasional freshening option. Like the vinegar cubes, it may help with smell, but it won’t resolve a backup that’s already happening.
For an ordinary week, I’d keep grease out and run water during grinding and briefly afterward, as you suggest. I’d treat vinegar or citrus as optional odor freshening, not as the step that prevents a backup.
For an occasional odor freshener, I’d lean toward citrus peel if it’s already on hand; it feels simpler than freezing and storing vinegar cubes. But that’s just a convenience preference - neither option is what I’d rely on to prevent a backup.
If a disposal keeps backing up despite keeping grease out and running water during grinding, I’d stop treating it as an odor problem and look into the cause of the recurring backup instead. Freshening might mask the smell, but it won’t address a persistent drainage issue.
Another low-effort habit is to scrape larger leftovers into the trash or compost before rinsing plates, so fewer food scraps need to go through the disposal in the first place.
