"Still, I wonder if running cold water longer after using the disposal might prevent buildup better?"

Could help a bit, but honestly, I've seen disposals get funky no matter what. My uncle swears by tossing lemon peels down there once a week—claims it keeps the swamp monsters at bay... jury's still out for me though.

Running cold water longer might help flush things through, but honestly, buildup usually happens from grease or food bits sticking around. Maybe try ice cubes occasionally? Heard they sharpen blades and scrape off gunk... anyone tried that method regularly? Curious if it actually works long-term.

I've tossed ice cubes down my disposal a bunch of times, and honestly, I think the whole "blade sharpening" thing might be a bit of an urban legend. Garbage disposals don't actually have sharp blades—they're more like blunt impellers that smash stuff around. Ice cubes do help knock loose some buildup though, so it's not entirely useless. But if you really want to kick out the swamp monster smell, try freezing some vinegar in ice cube trays and grinding those up occasionally. It freshens things up nicely and helps dissolve grease and slime. Plus, it's oddly satisfying to hear them crunching around down there... like revenge on the swamp monster that's invaded your sink.

Yeah, totally agree with this. Ice cubes won't magically sharpen anything, but they're decent for knocking off some of that nasty slime. Vinegar ice cubes are a solid tip too—I do that myself every month or so. Another quick fix is tossing in some citrus peels (lemon or orange)... smells way better than swamp monster funk, and it's easy enough to do regularly.

Haha, swamp monster funk is exactly how I'd describe mine last summer. I tried lemon peels, and it worked great until my wife accidentally dropped half a lime down there—whole thing jammed up like it was eating golf balls. Took me an hour to fish it out. Anyone else ever had a disposal disaster like that, or am I just lucky?
