Does feeding a disposal gradually help prevent jams or drain clogs?
Does adding scraps a little at a time while the disposal is running make a meaningful difference to jams in the disposal, compared with loading the chamber first and then turning it on? I’d follow the disposal’s manual, since feeding instructions can vary by model.
Is the answer different for clogs farther down the drain? How much does the routine matter compared with keeping water flowing and avoiding foods that tend to tangle or pack together?

For a jam in the chamber, feeding smaller amounts while it runs seems more relevant: it avoids asking the disposer to handle a packed load at once. A clog farther down is less directly about when the disposer starts and more about what goes through the drain; I’d give steady water flow and avoiding scraps that mat or pack together greater weight there. The model’s manual should settle the feeding order and water-use instructions.
