When should wet belongings stay put for the drying crew?
How much should be moved out before a restoration crew starts drying a water-damaged room? Clearing movable furniture and belongings might give them better access, but moving wet items could spread contaminated water or damage things that need careful handling.
Would your advice change depending on whether the water came from a clean supply line, a drain, or outside flooding? I’d also like to know where you draw the line between items someone can move and heavy furniture or built-ins best left to the crew. Before anything is discarded, what photos or inventory details are most useful for documenting the damage?

If the source is confirmed clean supply water, I’d lean toward moving small, easy-to-handle belongings to open access for drying. If it’s drain water or outside flooding - or the source is uncertain - I’d leave wet items alone and let the crew advise on handling. I’d also leave heavy furniture and built-ins to them; better access matters, but not at the cost of spreading potentially contaminated water or causing an injury.
