How do water extraction and structural drying charges get separated?
When a water-damage quote separates extraction from structural drying, what should each charge cover? How do you compare quotes when the full extent of moisture isn’t known yet?
I’d want to know whether moisture readings and follow-up checks are included in the drying charge, and how billing changes if those checks identify wet materials that need access or removal. Can extraction be authorized first, with drying or access work approved after the assessment, or do companies usually price the whole process upfront?

An extraction charge generally covers labor and equipment to remove accessible standing water. I’d ask the quote to specify which areas are included and whether any separate fees apply, rather than assuming every company uses the same scope.
I’d lean toward approving extraction first, then deciding on drying or access work once the initial assessment makes the scope clearer. A single upfront price is appealing for budgeting, but with unknown wet materials it may hide assumptions about duration or what’s included. Staging only feels useful if the quote spells out likely added costs and requires approval before extra work begins.
