Yeah, I hear you on the landfill guilt and drywall prices—neither one’s fun. But man, once that musty smell creeps in, it’s game over. I tried the “fans and dehumidifier” marathon too, but like you said,

“mold loves those dark, damp spaces behind drywall.”
It’s sneaky stuff. I’ve found if the water’s wicked up more than a few inches, it’s usually safer (and less gross) to just cut out a strip at the bottom and patch later. Not ideal, but better than chasing mold for months.

Cutting out that bottom strip is honestly the way to go once water gets up there—mold’s just too stubborn otherwise. I’ve seen folks try to save drywall and end up with way bigger headaches down the line. It’s a pain, but you’re definitely making the smart call. Patchwork’s not fun, but at least it beats tearing out whole walls later...

Yeah, cutting out that bottom section is usually the safest bet. I’ve seen people try to dry it out with fans and dehumidifiers, but if the water’s been sitting for more than a day or two, mold’s almost guaranteed to show up behind the drywall. Ever tried using a moisture meter before patching things up? Sometimes those hidden damp spots can surprise you. It’s a hassle now, but you’re saving yourself a ton of trouble down the road.

Cutting out that lower section really is the way to go, especially if you want to avoid all the mess that comes with hidden moisture. I learned that the hard way a couple years back—tried to just dry everything with fans and open windows, figured it was “good enough” because it felt dry to the touch. Didn’t even think about using a moisture meter at the time. Ended up with some stubborn mold behind the walls a few weeks later, which was a nightmare to remediate and not at all cheap.

Now I always check with a moisture meter, and I’m picky about what goes back in. I try to use recycled or salvaged materials when patching up, but only after I’m absolutely sure everything’s bone dry. It can be tempting to rush the process, especially if you’re dealing with a finished basement, but skipping steps just isn’t worth it. Sometimes I think people underestimate how persistent moisture can be—it really does find its way into every nook and cranny.

Cutting out the lower section is definitely the safest approach, especially if drywall or insulation got wet. I’ve seen too many cases where people just “let it dry” and then months later, you’re dealing with a musty smell or worse—hidden mold. Like you said,

“moisture can be—it really does find its way into every nook and cranny.”
Even concrete can hold moisture longer than you’d expect.

One thing I’d add: don’t forget about base plates and studs. They can look fine but still be damp inside. I always recommend pulling baseboards and drilling a few small inspection holes if there’s any doubt. It’s tedious, but it beats tearing everything out again down the road.
