I do wonder though, is there any way to keep those rain heads from clogging up so fast? Or is it just a losing battle if your water’s hard?

Honestly, I wouldn’t write off rain heads just because of hard water. We’ve got pretty mineral-heavy water here too, and while it’s true they need more attention, I’ve found a monthly soak in vinegar does wonders. It’s not as quick as swiping the rubber tips on a regular head, but it’s not a huge hassle either—just unscrew, soak, rinse, done.

One thing I noticed: some rain heads are easier to take apart than others. The cheap ones are a pain, but the better brands seem to design for cleaning. If you’re set on the regular head, fair enough, but I wouldn’t say it’s a lost cause for rain heads. Maybe it comes down to how much you value that “rainfall” feel versus the extra maintenance. For me, the trade-off’s worth it... at least until I get lazy and let it go too long, then it’s back to the old needle trick to clear out the spray holes.

I hear you on the maintenance trade-off. I’ve been waffling between sticking with my basic shower head or splurging on a rain head for ages, but the hard water situation always makes me hesitate. Vinegar soaks definitely help (I do the same with my kettle), but I always wonder if that’s just masking a bigger issue. Like, is there a point where the buildup gets so bad inside the head that even soaking won’t save it? Or am I just being overly cautious?

Also, not sure if anyone else has tried those cheap “filter” attachments you can screw on before the shower head. I grabbed one off Amazon for like $15, and it actually seemed to slow down the clogging for a while. Not a miracle fix, but maybe worth considering if you’re budget-minded and don’t want to keep buying new heads every year.

One thing I’ve noticed: the pricier rain heads do seem easier to take apart, but man, some of them are way out of my price range. At what point does it make sense to just replace the whole thing instead of fighting with mineral gunk every month? Sometimes I feel like I’m spending more on cleaning supplies than I would on a new shower head.

Anyway, I’m still on the fence. Love the idea of that “rainfall” vibe, but not sure if my wallet (or patience) is up for the challenge. Anyone else ever just give up and go back to basics after wrestling with these things?
