How should an auger cable size match the drain?

Cable size needs to suit the drain and the equipment, not just the blockage. How do you match cable size to pipe diameter and material, especially in older or fragile piping?

I’m also interested in how the choice changes between a hand auger and a powered machine. What signs while feeding the cable suggest it’s catching on a bend or pipe feature rather than working through the clog, and when is that a reason to stop and call a drain professional?
