What routine care keeps backflow test cocks from seizing?
What routine care is appropriate for backflow preventer test-cock caps and fittings without disturbing the assembly or affecting its testability? I’m unsure whether cleaning or lubrication should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, local requirements, or both.
A stiff cap seems different from a test cock that won’t operate, and I wouldn’t want routine maintenance to mask a fault or interfere with required testing. How do you keep debris and corrosion at bay, and when do you leave the fitting alone for a certified tester to assess or repair?

Follow both the assembly manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local requirements; if they conflict, get guidance from the authority responsible for testing rather than improvising. Routine care should stay external and gentle, such as wiping away dirt without turning or working the fittings. Don’t force, lubricate, or adjust a cap or test cock unless the instructions specifically call for it. If a cap resists removal or a test cock is stiff or won’t operate, leave it for a certified tester to assess so the condition isn’t masked or testability affected.
