"Maybe the food coloring just complicates things?"

Yeah, food coloring can definitely turn a simple leak check into an art project... I've found that dry toilet paper actually works even better than paper towels—it's thinner and shows moisture right away. Just wrap it loosely around the joint and you'll spot dampness in minutes, not hours. Cheap, quick, and no colorful mess to clean up afterward.

I've done the food coloring thing before, and honestly, it turned into more of a hassle than it was worth. Ended up with blue fingers for days... not exactly professional-looking, haha. Toilet paper trick is solid advice—thin enough to spot even tiny leaks. Another quick one I've used is chalk dust; sprinkle a little around suspect areas, and moisture darkens it instantly. Easy cleanup, too.

Haha, food coloring is definitely a rookie trap—been there, done that, got the rainbow fingers to prove it. A couple other quick hacks I've stumbled across:

- Baby powder works kinda like chalk dust, but bonus points for smelling nice afterward.
- Paper towels are decent too, but they can be a bit thick and soak up too much water, making it harder to pinpoint the exact leak spot.
- My personal favorite: dry erase markers. Just circle suspect areas on pipes or fittings; moisture smudges the ink instantly. Wipes off easy, no mess.

Just my two cents...

Wish I'd seen this thread a week ago, before I spent an hour scrubbing blue dye off my bathroom tiles...lesson learned. The dry erase marker trick sounds genius, though—definitely trying that next time. I've personally had luck with tissues instead of paper towels; they're thinner and pinpoint leaks faster, though they do get soggy quick. But hey, soggy tissues beat rainbow fingers any day, right?

Haha, totally agree—been there myself. Another handy trick I've found is using food coloring diluted in a spray bottle instead of directly dripping it. Just lightly mist around the suspected leak area, wait a minute or two, and you'll spot the leak without turning your bathroom into a Smurf crime scene. Saves cleanup time and your fingers stay human-colored...mostly. Give it a shot next time you're troubleshooting!
