How much does installation quality matter for tub-surround panels versus tile?

For a tub-shower surround, how much does installation quality change the long-term trade-off between acrylic panels and tile? Panels avoid grout lines, while tile offers more choices and may let you replace a damaged tile without redoing the whole wall. But neither sounds like a safe bet if water can get behind it.

I’m especially curious how each system should meet the tub flange and connect to the waterproofing. If a tile cracks or comes loose, is that usually a small repair, or can it point to a larger problem behind the wall? And what signs would suggest water intrusion or poor installation with either type?

Both systems need a continuous, correctly detailed water-management connection at the tub flange; neither finish alone is the waterproofing. With tile, grout and tile can let water through, so the waterproof layer behind them must be properly tied into the tub area. Panels avoid grout lines, but their seams and flange transition still need to follow the panel system’s compatible details. The exact connection varies by system, so I’d weigh confidence in those details more heavily than the surface material by itself.
