How much prep do tub-surround panels really save?
For a tub surround, how does the wall preparation and waterproofing differ between panels and tile? Panels seem simpler to keep clean, while tile offers more choice in layout and appearance, but I’m unsure how much of the work is in getting the surface behind either one right.
I’d also like to understand what happens at the tub flange and inside corners, where a small detail could affect whether water gets behind the finish. If a panel gets scratched or a tile’s grout is damaged, how practical is each repair without taking apart a large section? Which approach tends to suit a DIYer better, especially if future repairs matter?

Neither finish makes the backing irrelevant: grout isn’t waterproof, and panels still rely on a suitable substrate and properly sealed joints. The exact tub-flange connection depends on the panel or tile waterproofing system, so I’d follow that system’s detail rather than assume the visible finish is what keeps water out. Panels may simplify the finished surface, but they don’t eliminate careful work at the junctions.
