Water appears outside the shower only while it’s running

What clues help distinguish water escaping around the shower or drain from a leak in the pressurized supply behind the wall? The location alone seems hard to interpret, since water could travel before it becomes visible.

Would it help to note whether the dampness starts as soon as the shower runs or only after several minutes, and whether it appears near the drain, controls, or an adjacent wall? If the source isn’t clear, is it safest to leave the shower unused until it can be assessed? What signs would make shutting off the water and calling a plumber promptly the better choice?

If dampness appears only while the shower is running or afterward, water escaping at the drain, shower fittings, or enclosure is more likely than a continuously pressurized supply leak - but timing alone can’t identify the source. Dampness that continues or worsens while the shower is off raises more concern about a supply leak. Since water can travel before showing, stop using the shower if leakage is active or worsening; shut off the water and call a plumber promptly for spreading water, a steady leak, or signs of damage near electrical fixtures.
