New shower controls: concealed for a tidy look, or exposed for easier access?

For a hypothetical bathroom refresh, would you choose concealed shower controls for the cleaner look, or an exposed bar with the controls easier to reach for servicing? Assume the room is being updated anyway, but there is not a particular product or contractor quote to compare yet.

I can see the appeal of keeping the wall uncluttered. On the other hand, I would hate a small repair to turn into opening finished surfaces. I am unsure how much the type of control really determines that, compared with the way it is installed and what parts stay available.

Where would you put the money: the finish you will see every day, or making future repairs less awkward? What would make you change your preference?

The control style alone doesn’t determine whether a repair means opening the finished wall. For concealed controls, I’d look at whether the valve can be serviced through an opening at the trim or reached from the other side of the wall; that access can make a repair much less disruptive. It’d change my preference more than the exposed-versus-concealed look.

If there’s no practical service route, I’d give the exposed bar’s easier access more weight. The cleaner look may not be worth making a future repair more disruptive.

A trim opening or access from the other side may help with routine servicing, but would it still be usable if the valve itself needed replacing? If replacement meant opening the finished wall anyway, that could change the comparison.

The key is whether the opening is large enough to get the old valve out and the new one in, not just reach parts for routine servicing. Access from the other side could work for replacement too if that wall can be opened and repaired without disturbing the shower finish. If neither route gives enough room, I’d put more weight on the exposed bar.
