What would you do if your basement started smelling musty overnight?

- Had a similar thing last winter—musty smell popped up overnight, and I was convinced it was a leak. Turned out to be a forgotten bag of potatoes behind a storage shelf.
- Cold weather does make thermal cameras more sensitive, but yeah, they’ll pick up drafts and cold spots that aren’t always moisture.
- Condensation on exterior walls can definitely throw you off. Sometimes it’s just poor insulation or humidity, not an actual leak.
- I still do the “sniff test” first before breaking out any gadgets. If it smells earthy or like wet cardboard, I check for water. If it’s more sour or rotten, I look for old food or trash.
- Personally, I’d only invest in a camera if you’ve got recurring issues or can’t find the source after checking the basics. Otherwise, old-school methods work fine most of the time.

The sniff test saves so much time, honestly.

I’ve had both—one time it was a slow leak behind the water heater, another time just a lost apple that went bad. Have any of you actually found mold in hidden spots, like under carpets or inside walls? That’s my main worry with musty smells that show up overnight.

I totally get the paranoia about hidden mold—been there. Once I pulled up a carpet after a mystery musty smell and, sure enough, found some gnarly black spots underneath. It’s never as dramatic as TV makes it, but still gross. Trust your nose; if it smells off, there’s usually something lurking nearby.

Musty basement smells are a pain, no doubt. I’ve dealt with tenants calling about “phantom odors” more times than I can count, and honestly, your nose is usually right. Still, I’d say don’t just assume it’s always mold—sometimes it’s a leaky pipe or even a forgotten box of damp laundry. But yeah, if you find black spots, don’t mess around. Cut out the affected area and dry things out fast. Mold spreads way quicker than people think, and it’s not worth risking your health or property value.

- Totally get where you’re coming from—musty smells can be a real headache, and it’s easy to jump straight to “mold panic.”
- I’d add: don’t underestimate how much a small leak or even a humid spell can mess with things.
- Quick tip: I once found out my “mold” was just a soggy cardboard box behind the furnace... felt silly but relieved.
- Cutting out affected drywall is smart, but if you’re on a tight budget, sometimes just running a dehumidifier and tossing anything damp can make a big difference.
- You’re right, though—if you see black spots, don’t wait around. That stuff spreads fast and gets expensive if you ignore it.
