RE: When does draining a leaking water heater actually help?
I’d treat draining as a separate decision, not the default way to limit damage. It may be worth considering only when the leak is substantial, the drain path can safely carry the hot water, and you know how to do it or a...
RE: Navigating city hall: a plumbing permit adventure
City hall permit runs are never boring, I’ll give them that. One time I made it all the way to the counter - after waiting nearly an hour - only to find out they wanted the original, stamped site plan, not the photocopy....
RE: Getting water pressure back: my experience with a booster pump
Yeah, I hear you on the bearings. I tried fixing a cheap pump once, thinking I’d save a buck, but in the end it just wasn’t worth the headache. The seals were leaking by the time I got it running again anyway. Now I just...
RE: That weird hissing sound behind the bathroom door...
That’s the truth. I learned the hard way too - my first clue was the water bill, not the noise. It’s wild how something as small as a fill valve or flapper can quietly drain your wallet if you’re not paying attention. I ...
RE: Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?
Funny thing, I’ve actually had better luck with the old hardware too - my kitchen faucet is probably older than I am, and it’s outlasted two “modern” replacements in the bathroom. I do wonder, though, if anyone’s ever ju...
RE: WHEN YOUR LAWN TURNS INTO A SWAMP AFTER EVERY RAINSTORM
Been there with the “quick fixes.” I once tried poking holes all over my yard with a pitchfork, thinking I’d invented some genius drainage hack. All I got was sore arms and zero improvement. I looked into rain gardens to...
RE: Eco-Friendly Plumbing Choices: What’s Actually Worth It?
Honestly, I hear you on the “simple” fixes turning into more hassle than they’re worth. I swapped out our old toilet for a dual-flush too, thinking I’d save a few bucks on water. Now every time someone visits, I get a te...
RE: Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps - what would you do?
I get where you’re coming from, but I actually had the opposite experience with my last place. The in-kitchen trap was a pain - always smelled funky, and I’d end up splashing gunk everywhere trying to clean it out. Switc...
RE: Rusty water heater woes - repair or replace?
I hear you on the upfront cost - tankless was tempting, but I just couldn’t swing it last year. My old heater started rusting out around the base, so I patched it up with a new anode rod and flushed it a couple times. Bo...
RE: Need some advice on choosing new plumbing fixtures
Yeah, totally agree with this. We had chrome fixtures in our last place, and even though they're supposed to be easier to clean, the hard water stains were still a pain. I remember spending way too many weekends scrubbin...
RE: My Pipes Burst at 2 AM - Ever Had a Midnight Plumbing Nightmare?
Gotta agree prevention's key, but honestly, thermal cameras and regular checks aren't always budget-friendly for everyone. I learned the hard way after our pipes burst one winter - had to get creative with insulation aft...
RE: Kitchen sink disaster - DIY or call a plumber?
Haha, yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way when I decided to "quickly" fix a leaky faucet. Ended up buying three different wrenches, replacement parts that didn't fit, and spent an entire weekend under the sink cursi...
RE: why is documenting plumbing connections such a nightmare?
MagicPlan sounds decent, but honestly, I've always found simpler methods a bit more reliable for plumbing stuff. Last year, I tried using a similar app when redoing my kitchen sink connections - ended up spending more ti...
RE: need some advice on plumbing stuff for DIY bathroom fix-up
I've run into a similar issue myself. A few years back, I redid our guest bathroom on a tight budget - thought I'd save some cash by sealing things up nice and tight to keep the heat in. Worked great at first, but after ...
