RE: Do you miss being able to fill the basin with a grid strainer?
I wouldn’t assume the linkage makes a pop-up a major nuisance: it adds moving parts that can collect debris or need adjustment, but that’s a different kind of upkeep from cleaning the drain opening itself. A grid straine...
RE: What’s included in a rainwater tank installation quote?
Delivery access and ground preparation can be major variables: a difficult route for getting the tank into place, or extra work to prepare its base, may change installation costs. System scope matters too - a larger tank...
RE: Why does my hot water sometimes sound like popcorn?
I hear you on the “self-cleaning” myth - seen way too many tanks with a layer of crud at the bottom that’s definitely not supposed to be there. The popcorn noise usually means there’s sediment buildup, but I’ve run into ...
RE: Finally got my bathroom reno approved - permit process wasn’t as scary as I thought
Funny how that works, right? You stress over every little detail - meanwhile, the inspector just wants to make sure nothing’s leaking and the pipes are up to code. I’ve seen folks lose sleep over grout lines or tile layo...
RE: Rainwater toilets and greywater showers: City tries new water-saving tricks
Yeah, sealing those joints is way trickier than it looks, especially with greywater systems. I’ve seen people get tripped up by the difference in materials too - mixing copper with PVC or PEX can be a headache if you’re ...
RE: That weird hissing sound behind the bathroom door...
Yeah, tapping the lid never did much for me either - feels more like wishful thinking than an actual fix. Nine times out of ten, it’s that flapper not sealing right or the fill valve sticking. I’ve seen people try to “pa...
RE: anyone tried sustainable plumbing upgrades at home?
Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing with low-flow stuff - especially aerators and showerheads. They’re great for saving water, but if you’ve got hard water, they can clog up faster. I end up soaking mine in vinegar every c...
RE: When is it time to swap out old pipes?
I get what you’re saying about spot repairs, especially if the leaks are isolated. But I’ve seen cases where folks kept patching up old galvanized lines and ended up with a mess - water stains popping up in new spots eve...
RE: When is it time to swap out old pipes?
Definitely seeing the same thing in a lot of older homes - galvanized pipes just don’t hold up over decades. Once you start getting rust in the water or weird pressure drops, it’s usually a sign the inside of those pipes...
RE: Burst pipe panic: what would you do?
Can’t blame you for thinking about smart shutoffs after that. In theory, manual’s all you need, but in practice... panic hits hard. I’ve seen even seasoned folks freeze up or fumble under pressure. No shame in wanting a ...
RE: My Pipes Burst at 2 AM - Ever Had a Midnight Plumbing Nightmare?
Heat tape works, but honestly, relying on solar or battery for pipe heating isn't practical. Solar's unreliable in winter, and batteries drain fast under constant load. Better insulation or sealing drafts is usually more...
RE: Finally got my bathroom reno right for everyone to use comfortably
Yeah, fiberglass insulation can definitely be rough if you aren't geared up properly. I remember my first time working with it - I underestimated how irritating those tiny fibers could be. Thought I'd be fine with just a...
RE: Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Your Drains Clear and Fresh
I've had similar experiences with baking soda and vinegar. Honestly, it seems more like a temporary fix than a real solution. Last year, I had to help replace some pipes at my parents' place - older copper piping - and w...
RE: Finally found a sink filter worth keeping
Could be placebo, honestly. I've installed plenty of these under-sink filters, and while they're great for removing chlorine and sediment, the taste difference isn't always night-and-day. Depends a lot on your local wate...
