RE: What should a bathroom vanity replacement quote include?
The permit wording should also say who actually obtains it and schedules the inspection. It’s not enough to list permits as “included” if the homeowner is still expected to handle the paperwork. I’d look for whether wor...
RE: Why does my hot water sometimes sound like popcorn?
Yeah, that popcorn sound is pretty much the water heater’s way of crying for help. I used to think it was just normal “old house” noises until I actually watched a plumber open one up - there was this thick layer of gunk...
RE: KEEPING THE HEAT ON: DOES REGULAR FILTER CLEANING REALLY MATTER?
FILTERS AREN’T MAGIC, BUT THEY’RE NOT USELESS EITHER That backwards filter story hits close to home. My first winter working with my uncle (he’s been in plumbing and HVAC forever), we got called out to a place where t...
RE: Making sure your home’s pipes are up to code - how I do it
Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve seen a few push-to-connects start leaking after a year or two, especially if the pipe wasn’t prepped right. Like you said, That’s been drilled into me since day one. I do like ...
RE: That weird hissing sound behind the bathroom door...
Radiators are the worst for that - mine sounds like it’s boiling a pot of angry snakes half the winter. I once spent an hour convinced there was a leak behind the wall, only to find out it was just the wind whistling thr...
RE: Saving water in the shower actually worked for me
Manual regen has saved my bacon a couple times when the softener got weird. As for those shower timers, my roommate tried one - worked for like three days before we all started ignoring it. Guess it depends how stubborn ...
RE: Water pooling in basement - could it be a sneaky drain issue?
Roots are sneaky little troublemakers, aren’t they? I used to think if water was draining, everything was good... then I found a mess of roots clogging up the line just like you did. It’s wild how far they’ll travel for ...
RE: Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?
Man, I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s actually kind of comforting to know I’m not the only one who’s had to flip a cartridge or two just to make the handles feel “normal.” You’d think by now there’d be some u...
RE: Under Sink Hookup vs. Dedicated Drain Line: Which Is Better for Dishwashers?
I hear you on the late-night emergencies... had to mop up more than one mess because someone skipped the air gap or used a cheap hose. I get why folks go for the under-sink hookup - it's quicker - but honestly, a dedicat...
RE: Making sure your home’s pipes are up to code - how I do it
Yeah, I get what you mean about the eco stuff looking good on paper. Tried some recycled denim insulation in my crawlspace once - ended up with soggy blue fluff and a weird smell after a few months. Switched to foam wrap...
RE: Eco-Friendly Plumbing Choices: What’s Actually Worth It?
Pipe insulation really is one of those things that just makes sense - cheap, quick, and you actually feel the difference in winter. I hear you on the low-flow showerheads, though. Tried one at my old place and it was lik...
RE: green plumbing showdown: greywater recycling vs rainwater harvesting
Yeah, those “flushable” wipes are a total scam. I’ve pulled more than a few out of pipes that looked like they’d been down there since the Stone Age. And don’t even get me started on bacon grease... you’d think people wo...
RE: Water pooling in basement - could it be a sneaky drain issue?
Honestly, you nailed it with the camera scope idea. It’s wild how much can be going on in those pipes that you’d never know about. I’ve seen roots, weird buildup, even a lost toy car once (don’t even ask how it got there...
RE: Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps - what would you do?
Yeah, I hear you on the long-term thinking. The upfront cost for outdoor traps can sting a bit, but honestly, the peace of mind is worth it. I’ve seen way too many kitchen setups where the indoor traps just turn into a n...
RE: Water pressure woes - anyone else dealt with this?
Haha, Sharpie marks are underrated DIY magic. I totally second the plumbing gauge recommendation - those tire gauges just aren't cut out for water (been there, flooded that). One thing I'd add is checking your pressure r...
