RE: Drips from the box vs. leaks at the connections - what’s worse?
Honestly, I’d take a slow drip over a hidden leak any day, even if it means getting a face full of dust bunnies under the sink. At least with a visible drip, you’ve got a shot at catching it before it turns into a full-b...
RE: Why does my hot water sometimes sound like popcorn?
I’ve seen a few tanks where folks ignored that anode rod for years - by the time they called me, the tank was already leaking at the bottom. Not much you can do at that point except replace the whole thing. It’s easy to ...
RE: Plumbing tips that change with the seasons
You’re right about crawl spaces - those places hide all sorts of issues. I’ve seen insulation jobs where folks skipped the corners or left gaps, thinking it wouldn’t matter. It always does. I tend to use pipe sleeves plu...
RE: Handy shortcuts for finding plumbing info quick
Had a similar experience with infrared thermometers - sometimes they’re just not trustworthy, especially in places with old plaster walls or weird air currents. I get what you mean about stud finders; the metal-scan mode...
RE: Drain upkeep tips after seeing that crazy news story
I’ve seen way too many folks pour boiling water straight down their PVC just because someone online said it works wonders. That can backfire pretty quick - had a call last winter where a homeowner warped their trap, and ...
RE: When your bathroom sink ends up off-center
I get where you're coming from about the split loom tubing looking a bit clunky. Under the sink, aesthetics usually take a back seat to function, but it can be frustrating when you want things tidy. You mentioned, "" and...
RE: Handy shortcuts for finding plumbing info quick
Labeling Pipes - Tape Isn’t Always Foolproof I get the appeal of painter’s tape for marking things, but I’ve run into a few issues with it, especially in basements or crawlspaces where humidity’s a factor. Even the blue...
RE: Keeping Pipes Safe and My Sanity Intact
Mechanical valves definitely have their quirks, but honestly, I've seen just as many issues with electronic ones. Last year, a client's electronic valve failed during a power outage - no backup, no manual override, nothi...
RE: What if your street flooded because drains were clogged?
I get why you'd jump in and clear the drains yourself - it's practical and quick - but I'd be cautious about making that a regular habit. Storm drains can hide hazards like sharp debris, broken glass, or even chemical ru...
RE: finally figured out my boiler plumbing - anyone else find it tricky?
Totally agree on the snowballing thing - seen it way too often. Boilers aren't exactly forgiving if you miss something small. A buddy of mine tried DIY-ing his pressure relief valve... let's just say his basement got an ...
RE: green plumbing showdown: greywater recycling vs rainwater harvesting
Copper strips can help, sure, but honestly I've found zinc strips to be a bit more reliable overall. Installed copper on a client's roof last year - did everything right, cleaned algae first, proper width - but results w...
RE: Finally won the battle against invading tree roots
Good points about the pruning and root cutting - those can definitely help manage growth without going extreme. But from a safety standpoint, I'd be cautious about selective root cutting if the tree's close to foundation...
RE: Need some advice on choosing new plumbing fixtures
Couldn't agree more. Also, don't underestimate the value of quality shut-off valves - seen plenty of minor leaks turn into midnight emergencies because someone skimped there. Better safe than sorry...
RE: do you pay attention to water-saving rules when fixing stuff at home?
Definitely understandable - safety first, conservation second. Honestly, I've seen some nasty accidents from folks hesitating too long over water-saving concerns. Better to shut things down fast and worry about efficienc...
RE: finally figured out my boiler plumbing - anyone else find it tricky?
Good advice there, especially about subtle signs. I've had a few close calls myself because I overlooked minor pressure fluctuations - lesson learned the hard way. Glad you're sorted now, always satisfying once it's runn...
