RE: High loop or countertop air gap: which dishwasher drain setup is best?
A kink or tight bend can restrict flow whether the hose runs through a high loop or an air gap, so the route still matters after choosing the backflow setup. I’d avoid pinching the hose behind the dishwasher or forcing a...
RE: Turning sunlight into hot showers: best kits or hacks?
Yeah, pre-insulated PEX is one of those things I keep eyeing too, but the price is rough. I’ve managed with foam and tape for years, and honestly, as long as you’re not running lines through an arctic wind tunnel, it doe...
RE: How do you handle the dirty work: DIY or call in the pros?
Totally get this. I tried to fix a leaky faucet once, thinking I’d save water and money, but ended up making it worse and calling a plumber anyway. Now I just focus on the eco-friendly stuff I know I can handle - like sw...
RE: That weird hissing sound behind the bathroom door...
Honestly, I think that’s just smart. Water leaks are sneaky, and catching them early saves so much hassle (and water). I keep an old rag and a bucket handy too - learned my lesson after one tiny leak turned into a full-o...
RE: Why does my hot water sometimes sound like popcorn?
I’ve tried the vinegar trick a couple times, but honestly, I didn’t notice a huge difference compared to just flushing with water. Maybe it helps a little if you do it regularly and don’t let the buildup get too bad in t...
RE: When your water heater goes rogue: quick fixes and hacks
Yeah, I’ve been down the “patch it and pray” road too. It’s wild how fast a little rust turns into a full-blown disaster. I get wanting to squeeze every last drop out of an old tank, but honestly, swapping it for a high-...
RE: When your water heater goes rogue: quick fixes and hacks
Yeah, I’ve been there with those “miracle” patches. They always sound like a good idea until you’re knee-deep in water and regret. Tried one with my old tank last winter… ended up creating a weird eco-petri dish in the b...
RE: Kitchen sink disaster - DIY or call a plumber?
Yeah, I’ve definitely had a “simple” repair turn into a mini nightmare. Last year, I tried to swap out a leaky trap and ended up discovering the whole pipe was basically crumbling. Ended up calling a plumber anyway, and ...
RE: Choosing between in-kitchen and underground grease traps - what would you do?
Yeah, the smell is definitely a thing with in-kitchen traps. I’ve had that issue too, especially in summer when things heat up. What’s worked best for me is making sure the seals are tight and using baking soda down the ...
RE: When is it time to swap out old pipes?
Honestly, I’m with you on not tossing out pipes just because they’re “old.” My last house had copper lines from the 70s - patched a couple pinholes and they held up fine for years. I do get a little twitchy about lead or...
RE: need some advice on setting up a rain harvesting setup at home
Good call on the overflow hose - I did something similar after a nasty storm last spring flooded part of my yard. Have you thought about adding a rain garden nearby to soak up excess runoff? Might be a nice eco-friendly ...
